ISO 1461 Hot-Dip Galvanizing Guide

ISO 1461 Hot-Dip Galvanizing for Steel Waste Containers

Hot-dip galvanizing is widely specified for steel waste containers used in outdoor, municipal and industrial environments.

When a buyer requests galvanizing according to ISO 1461, both the supplier and buyer should understand what the standard covers.

What Is ISO 1461:2022?

ISO 1461:2022 specifies general properties and test methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings applied by dipping fabricated iron and steel articles into a zinc melt.

The standard applies to fabricated articles, including certain castings, but excludes several continuously galvanized sheet, wire, mesh, tube and pipe processes.

Why the Distinction Matters

The following terms should not be treated as identical:

  • Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication
  • Pre-galvanized sheet
  • Electro-galvanized steel
  • Zinc-rich paint
  • Cold galvanizing compound
  • Powder-coated galvanized sheet

A container fabricated from pre-galvanized sheet is not automatically the same as a fully fabricated container galvanized by immersion after welding.

Common Applications

Hot-dip galvanized waste containers are often considered for:

  • Outdoor municipal collection
  • Humid environments
  • Industrial facilities
  • Frequent washing
  • Coastal projects
  • Government tenders
  • Long-term sanitation projects

Information to Include in a Purchase Specification

A clear specification should include:

  • Steel material
  • Steel thickness
  • Galvanizing stage
  • Applicable standard
  • Required coating inspection
  • Areas requiring drainage or venting
  • Post-galvanizing finishing
  • Repair method for damaged areas
  • Required reports or certificates

Design Considerations

A product intended for hot-dip galvanizing should be designed with the process in mind.

Container geometry may need suitable openings for:

  • Zinc flow
  • Air release
  • Drainage
  • Safe immersion
  • Internal coating access

The galvanizing plan should be discussed before finalizing the technical drawing.

Correct SEO and Marketing Wording

Use wording such as:

Hot-dip galvanized coating available according to project requirements.

Or, where documentation supports it:

Hot-dip galvanized coating produced and inspected according to ISO 1461:2022 requirements.

Avoid presenting an ISO management certificate as proof that every individual product automatically conforms to ISO 1461. amet.
